Bay Window Treatments
Regardless of the type of window treatments you're interested in, you should always start the selection process
by determining the function they are to perform. Do you need bay window treatments to achieve privacy, filter or
block light, or complement and enhance the decorating theme of the room in which the bay window appears.
Frequently, the purposes are combined as in looking for a bay window treatment that will both offer privacy and
enhance the decor of the room. Another thing to keep in mind with bay window treatments is determining whether you
truly have a "bay" window or simply a bow window. What's the difference. Think of it this way. A bow window is a
grouping of 3 or more windows mulled together in a curved effect. If that "bow" window is enclosed in a space large
enough to walk into, it is a "bay" window. In reality it's a bow window enclosed in a bay! True bow windows start
flush with the wall and extend a short distance to the outside leaving only an enlarged sill or shelf on the
inside. So what difference does that make?
Bay window treatements can be broken down into two categories: those mounted on the frame covering the entire
bow, and those mounted directly on each of the windows making up the bow. Curtains and vertical blinds are the most
common bay window treatements that cover the entire window. But they also make the bay area inaccessible. So if
your bay has a small sitting area or some decorative items like vases or curio tables, you want them available and
visible at all times. So while privacy at night might be your principal reason for buying bay window treatements
you still want those items within the bay visible and accessible. You can either consider putting in a custom
curved track that would allow curtains to follow the curved lines of the bay or you look at options that only cover
the three or more windows within the bay.
Cafe curtains mount directly on the window frames at the top and bottom. Select and hem your fabric, slide your
fabric panels onto the cafe rod and you're done. For light filtering you would go with sheer fabric and if you're
interested in better light blocking or a patterned curtain to build on the decor of the room, go with a heavier
fabric. But remeber, most bay windows are on the first floor so the backing of whatever fabric you select can be
seen from the street. Mini blinds are another option that can be mounted directly to the window. Attaching mounting
hardware at both the bottom and the top of the window keeps them from swaying and gives a tigher fit. Stock colors
are available at major Home Centers and can be cut to size. More color selections are avaiable through special
order or online retailers.
If cosmetic enhancements is your principal purpose for getting bay window treatments, full draw curtains give
you the most options. Many hang double curtains with a full fabric design on the outer run and a sheer or lace
pattern on the inner runner. Good luck with your Bay Windows!
